Backdrop mural for the Haruo Uchiyama Forest Bird Carvings Permanent Exhibit at the Bishop Museum
7’ x 9’ Acrylic painting; Commissioned by the Friends of Bishop Museum;
Completion Date July 12, 2024
When Haruo Uchiyama presented his idea for an exhibit of his Hawaii bird carvings to then Princess Michiko of Japan, she showed him a painting she had by Patrick Ching entitled “Hidden Valley”. Haruo then contacted Patrick to paint the background for his Hawaiian forest bird carvings. This exhibit is a combination of Haruo’s birds, a modified version of Patrick's Hidden Valley painting, and the craftsmanship of the Bishop Museum’s exhibit builders.

The strong cultural aspects of the community, reflected in music and hula, are depicted in the mural. The owl, mascot of the school, represents the school as a center of learning, academic success, and a foundation for lifelong learning.
